Celebrating Black History Month

Explorers celebrated Black History month  learning about the significant contributions by African Americans in multiple fields. They read Luke Goes to Bat, a story about a boy who loves baseball and loves Jackie Robinson. They reviewed how life was different for African Americans before Martin Luther King, Jr. worked with his followers to change the laws. They learned that Jackie Robinson was the first African American baseball player to play on a white baseball team, the Brooklyn Dodgers. They also read Mae Among the Stars, a book about Mae Jemison, the first African American woman astronaut. The children made an astronaut art project in her honor. After they read about Louis Armstrong, a couple of their 5th grade big buddies came to play their trumpets to them. What a treat!
