Exploring Occupations

The Explorer classes had a wonderful time with their theme about occupations. The occupations included health care workers, restaurant staff, law enforcement, construction crew, and beauty salons. One of our wonderful parents who is a surgeon visited the students and talked about surgery and life in a hospital. Activities at Centers were related to the different occupations such as making band aid cookies with graham crackers and white frosting; matching lowercase “Band-Aids” to uppercase “boo-boos” on bears. In Science, they learned about the Physics concepts of force, work and gravity as Mrs. Papadopoulos moved a heavy load with a dump truck. The children also practiced cutting and completed patterns of tools for different occupations. They painted using combs instead of paint brushes and drew a face with a hairstyle in their journals. They completed occupation puzzles, and we had lots of fun pretending to be customers and stylists in our Explorer Salon. They read How a House is Built and Digger Dozer Dumper and moved rocks and wood with construction vehicles in the sensory table and pretended to build a brick building (with our large cardboard blocks) in the Explorer Construction Site.
